SMT for boards, ageing racks, and an integrating sphere. The sphere is the tell: real lighting factories measure their own lumen output rather than repeating the chip maker’s figure.
What certification is needed to import led & lighting into the EU or US?
The EU requires CE under the Low Voltage and EMC directives with RoHS, plus ErP efficiency limits and the EU energy label; ENEC is the mark buyers ask for commercially. The US uses UL 1993 or 8750, FCC Part 15B, and DLC or ENERGY STAR listing where rebates matter.
What order minimums and tooling costs should I expect?
Typically 500–2,000 pieces, with driver and housing tooling dominating the first-order cost.
What goes wrong most often in this category?
Overstated lumen output and CRI, and drivers that fail long before the LEDs do. Ask for LM-80 data on the chip and the driver’s own datasheet — a fixture-level claim tells you nothing about which part will fail.
