Buying consumer electronics from China
Written from the sourcing work we do, not from the suppliers listed above.
- How do you tell a real manufacturer from a trading company?
- SMT lines, reflow ovens and a functional test bench. Ask to see the test jig built for your product — a trading company cannot produce one.
- What certification is needed to import consumer electronics into the EU or US?
- The EU needs CE marking covering EMC and, for anything with a radio, the Radio Equipment Directive, plus RoHS and a technical file. The US needs FCC Part 15 and an FCC ID for radios. Lithium batteries add UN38.3 for transport and IEC 62133.
- What order minimums and tooling costs should I expect?
- Typically 500–2,000 units, with enclosure tooling from $5,000 to $40,000. Firmware customisation is usually quoted separately as engineering cost.
- What goes wrong most often in this category?
- Component substitution after the golden sample — capacitors, battery cells and the wireless module are the usual swaps, and all three change certification status. Lock the bill of materials by manufacturer part number.
